Overview

This session introduces a grounded approach to paranormal investigation: preparation, observation, documentation, safety, teamwork and respect for the people and places involved. An investigation should never begin with the assumption that something paranormal has already been proven.

Part 1 — Start With a Baseline

Before looking for anything unusual, understand what is normal for the location. Note temperature changes, drafts, electrical systems, plumbing, traffic, animals, neighbouring activity, building movement and known environmental factors.

A good investigation records ordinary explanations first. That makes unusual observations easier to evaluate later.

Part 2 — Observation VS Interpretation

Observation: ‘I heard three knocks from the hallway.’

Interpretation: ‘A spirit knocked three times.’

Keep these separate in your notes. The observation is what happened. The interpretation is one possible explanation.

Part 3 — Team Practice

Before beginning, decide who is responsible for each role. Avoid everyone asking questions at the same time. Record who is speaking and when equipment is moved.

• Time and location logging.

• Audio/video equipment.

• Environmental readings.

• Interviewing witnesses.

• Safety and check-ins.

Part 4 — Respect for Witnesses

People may be frightened, grieving, stressed or simply curious. Do not increase fear by presenting an interpretation as fact. Listen first. Ask neutral questions. Do not promise that you can prove a haunting or remove an entity.

Part 5 — Basic Safety

• Never enter private property without permission.

• Do not investigate unsafe structures.

• Work with a partner or team.

• Know your exits.

• Respect local laws and site rules.

• Stop if anyone becomes physically or emotionally overwhelmed.

Practice Between Sessions

Choose one room in your home and create a baseline log. Record ordinary sounds, temperature, lighting, mechanical noises and outside activity at two different times of day. The purpose is to practice observation, not to search for a haunting.
